Four Days of Frivolity: The 2009 WPBT

December 14, 2009

Let me ‘splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. — Inigo Montoya

The bloggers descended on Vegas this past weekend and my liver may never be the same. As usual, there was too little time and too many people and to fully take in everything this crazy weekend had to offer, but that didn’t stop me from trying. Some highlights – or lowlights, as the case may be – included:

  • Golfing in 40 degree weather – 15 hearty (read stupid) souls braved one of the coldest days Vegas had to offer in order to chase little white balls around the once spectacular Vegas National golf course. Located just east of the Strip, Vegas National was popular with the Rat Pack back in the day and was a key location in Casino (Robert DeNiro’s home in the movie is located just off the first tee.) A scramble format ensured that my less than stellar (read shitty) play didn’t adversely impact my team, which included Dr. Chako and Naseem the Putting Machine, who were both instrumental in our tournament winning four-under finish.
  • Pokerati poker at the Hard Rock – After thawing out in a hot shower at home, it was off to the Hard Rock where the Pokerati game was in full swing with two full tables of bloggers looking to take each others’ money. Hijinx ensued, as usual, and I had a great time playing and bull-shitting with folks like Lt. Colombo, Garth, Katie, Dan, and CK.
  • Steel Panther – What better way to end a long day than by watching the musical stylings of Vegas’ premier Heavy Metal jokers? For as good as the show was, the action in the crowd was even better. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Otis look happier than when he was seated between CK and The Wife (not that I’m jealous or anything).
  • The Blogger donkament – Sure, my team busted out in near-record time and Jen dealt me a bad beat by cracking my Aces with her Ace-Queen of spades, but I just didn’t care. Trading jokes with Iggy and JDN, and watching the hammer dropped all across Caesars poker room was worth much more than $110.
  • Sunday at Lagasse – For a football fan, there’s nothing better than the man-cave at Lagasse. Huge TVs, a pool table, comfortable couches. Throw in a bunch of bloggers and some random, degenerate sports betting, and a smooch from The Wife, and Sundays don’t get much better.

Mix all of the above with countless rounds at the Geisha Bar, semi-drunken Pai Gow, and an amazing mix of new and old friends, and weekends don’t get much better. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to detox.

So good to see you, talk with you, and kiss you.

Good part is that you haven’t hit Doc’s jealousy radar yet, so that gives you a lot of liberties . . . 🙂 I sense a few more smooches in the future.

I can’t agree with you more Michelle. Hanging with you was definitely a highlight of the weekend. And congratulations on your good news.

    I’m watching you…

(nah – it was great hanging with you. Enjoyed our chat. I’ll definitely give you a call next time I swing by).

Don’t worry, Katkin-sweety . . . I’ll post something about having an itch for one of the other bloggers . . . we’ll throw doc off our scent, get him watching someone like Otis again, or maybe Iggy, and then we’re in the clear.
